GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — The mother of an 8-year-old girl killed
by a hit-and-run driver just outside Greensboro says she is upset
by criticism that parental neglect led to her daughter’s death.
The News & Record of Greensboro reported Thursday that Carey and
Timothy Shelton want the public to know they left their daughter,
Marissa, in the care of other family members when they drove to a
nearby grocery store.
Marissa sneaked away and was apparently trying to follow her
parents when she was hit by a car as she tried to cross a busy
highway on a bike July 21.
Investigators are searching for the driver who struck Marissa.
A car wash is planned Saturday to help raise funds to cover
Marissa’s funeral, which took place Wednesday.
